A couple of months ago, I was delighted to find out that my short story ‘Sayyida Nanda’ about a child-bride had been chosen as part of innovative indie-publisher Retreat West’s call out for stories to celebrate 100 years of women’s suffrage. My story had done the rounds of a few competitions and not made the grade, so it was proof of the subjectivity of the process involved in assessing literary quality; at least two people had thought it was worthy of inclusion whereas that clearly wasn’t the case before!
The Word for Freedom anthology is being published on the 1st November and a week later I’ll be attending the launch party at the Feminist Library in London.
